Youth Event at LinkedIn
Several months ago, NOVA was selected as a local partner in Sunnyvale by LinkedIn for Good as part of its Engage In initiative launched to tackle the issue of global youth unemployment. The kick-off event took place on April 2. As part of this endeavor, LinkedIn employees will be volunteering to be coaches and mentors for NOVA’s youth customers over the course of the year. In addition, LinkedIn will be sponsoring several special youth events, and the first of these events took place on May 15.
Forty juniors and seniors from Fremont High School’s Academic Foundations Class arrived at LinkedIn in Sunnyvale for an unforgettable day of activities. The Academic Foundations Class provides support and resources for underserved students that will lead to graduation, higher education and career success. The day began with introductions and a scavenger hunt among the different departments at LinkedIn where youth learned about the career opportunities that are available in the tech industry and, most importantly, the education and skill requirements necessary to access and succeed in this sector. Then youth participated in a “speed mentoring” exercise where LinkedIn employee mentors talked with youth in a rotating question and answer session about their career development. Towards the end of the event, youth were then matched individually with other LinkedIn employee mentors based on their interests and background, which was achieved through a survey that both youth and LinkedIn employee volunteers completed in advance of the event. And the connections that were made will be life changing for some of these youth. For example, one youth who is in foster care was paired with a LinkedIn employee who shared a similar background. And another youth who was interested in a career in athletic training was paired with a LinkedIn manager who is involved in health and wellness. At the conclusion of the event, there was a great deal of excitement in the air and a recommendation was made to have a celebratory barbecue at the youth’s school, in the future.
NOVA would like to thank LinkedIn for this wonderful day where 100 LinkedIn employees generously donated their time and encouragement to support forty at-risk youth begin an exciting new chapter in their lives. It was a truly memorable experience for everyone involved.
