LinkedIn InDay Event for NOVA Youth

LinkedIn hosts InDay events as an opportunity to give back to the local community and “invest, inspire and innovate.” For the past year, LinkedIn has partnered with NOVA on youth employment through several grant initiatives. As part of this collaboration, LinkedIn has also hosted special InDay events for NOVA’s customers and, on May 20, hosted an event for youth at the LinkedIn campus in Sunnyvale.

Through Fremont High School, De Anza College and Columbia Middle School, NOVA recruited over 100 youth to participate in the May 20 event with a focus on learning more about leadership, future careers and themselves. The youth were divided into four groups with activities customized to the particular needs of each group. The first group consisted of 30 youth members of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and DECA who participated in a breakfast with guest speakers from LinkedIn — Andy Ku from Product Marketing and Christina Hall, Vice President of Compensation — who discussed the importance of networking and preparing for careers in Silicon Valley. The second group, comprised of 20 young women, were mentored by the Women at LinkedIn (WALI) employee group about developing better interviewing skills and was joined by a third group of 40 youth, who had participated in a speed networking exercise, for a networking lunch with LinkedIn employees, followed by a career fair with representatives from the diverse professions offered at the company. The fourth group of 16 disadvantaged eighth-graders from Columbia Middle School met with LinkedIn employees and Fremont High School community outreach staff for discussion and icebreaker games with a focus on positive role modeling, communication, developing better self-esteem and relationship-building. Overall, the event was a tremendous experience for youth in this community as they begin to shape their career path that will lead to fulfillment and self-sufficiency.

NOVA is very appreciative of the support from our education partners and from LinkedIn for offering the community’s youth this wonderful opportunity.
