- Awards
Due to NOVA's history of success, NOVA was invited to become a charter member
of the Enterprise, an initiative of the U.S. Department of Labor which
recognizes best-in-class workforce development organizations.
Continued growth is made possible by NOVA's willingness and capacity
to engage in multi-agency partnerships, adapt services and technologies
to meet customer needs, and successfully link businesses with the candidates
they need.

Highlights in NOVA History
2005
- A report co-sponsored by
DOL highlights NOVA's success as a workforce investment board. Entitled
"Learning to Be Demand
Driven: A Case Study of NOVA," the study shows how NOVA overcame
serious challenges to remain responsive to both business and employees.
NOVA was selected for its outstanding performance by the National Business
Learning Partnership (NBLP), a collaborative of Workforce Investment Boards,
the U.S. Department of Labor and the Business Relations Group. NOVA was
one of four workforce boards chosen for in-depth study with the intent
of improving workforce service delivery throughout the country.
- NOVA is featured in a report that is a compilation
of success stories from Workforce Investment Boards in California, Oregon
and Washington. Entitled, "Celebrating
Our Success American Business Leaders Discuss the Value of the
Workforce Investment System," the report demonstrates
the positive impacts of local Workforce Investment Boards on American
businesses and workers throughout the nation.
2004
- Two members of the NOVA Workforce Board and its Director
were invited to participate in a regional meeting with Sunne Wright McPeak,
Governor Schwarzenegger's Secretary of Business, Transportation, and Housing.
The meeting's topic was economic recovery.
- A report published
in April 2004 by the Research Institute for Small and Emerging Business
(RISEbusiness) highlighted NOVA for its "structured, tailored outreach
and service strategy for listening to small and emerging businesses in
order to address their particular needs, and for investing staff capacity-building
to support effective small and emerging business engagement and service
delivery."
- NOVA was honored to have Congresswoman Anna Eshoo
provide opening remarks at the Open
House of the relocated NOVA Youth Employment Office.
2003
- NOVA is selected as a mentor site for the Department
of Labor's National Business Learning Partnerships peer-to-peer training
project. The goal of the project is to enhance the entire workforce system
by linking mentors with strong performance records and notable business
services strategies with protégés (local workforce investment
areas).
2002
- NOVA combines job search resources with EDD, ProMatch
and CONNECT! partners to create the CONNECT! Job Seeker Center, featuring
universal workshops, a greater number of computers, and an expanded library.
- NOVA/CONNECT! selected as one of 13 "promising
one-stop workforce development systems" nationwide to be visited
by examiners from the U.S. General Accounting Office.
2001
- Governor Gray Davis selects NOVA as the site for his
press conference announcing the awarding of several grants to serve dislocated
workers, including $7 million to NOVA for its Skills Testing
Assessment and Reemployment (STAR) project.
- The Department of Labor recognizes NOVA/CONNECT! as
one of 13 "Promising Practices" nationwide in one-stop innovations.
- NOVA is selected as one of five sites nationally to
participate in the Department of Labor's satellite-linked 21st Century
Workforce Summit.
1997
- NOVA's Youth@Work website is added to the Smithsonian Institute's permanent collection for
its innovative use of technology.
- NOVA initiates the formation of CONNECT! Workforce and Business Solutions for Silicon Valley, a collaborative providing
one-stop services to individuals and businesses.
1996
- NOVA and partners develop Youth@Work,
an Internet-based system to enhance youth employment and employability
in Santa Clara, San Mateo, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties.
1994
- NOVA is featured in Washington, D.C. at a two-day symposium
entitled, "What's Working in America," moderated by Secretary of Labor
Reich.
1993
- President Clinton, Vice President Gore, and Secretary
of Labor Reich visit NOVA and praise our program for its focus on customers,
not on regulations.
Awards
- NOVA and UC Santa Cruz jointly awarded the Buzz Aldrin Space Education & Workforce SpotBeam Award by the California Space Authority for the development of the certificate program to transition dislocated software engineers into careers as aerospace engineers.
- NOVA Labor Market Information Plus (LMI+) receives
the JETT*CON (Joint Employment and Training Technology Conference)
Showcase Award for access and accessibility.
- NOVA Labor Market Information Plus (LMI+) receives
the Workforce Development Award for Excellence from the National
Association of Counties (NACO).
- NOVA's Youth@Work website receives the Putnam Award for Excellence from the California League
of Cities.
- NOVA receives the Enterprise Award for National Performance
Excellence for overall organizational performance based on the Malcolm
Baldrige National Quality Award criteria.
- CONNECT! kiosk system wins Technology Innovation Award
at ITEC conference in San Jose. The CONNECT! kiosk system provides touch-screen,
multilingual, multimedia access to information and referral services.
- NOVA's Youth@Work website receives the Innovation Award from the Council on Excellence in
Government.
- NOVA receives the National Alliance of Business Distinguished
Performance Award
- Presidential Award for Outstanding Job Training Program
in the Nation
- Governor's Award for Exemplary Service Coordination
- National Alliance of Business Award for SDA of the
Year
