Have you ever been on a team that got bogged down in indecision and
argument? What about a team that couldn't get its decisions implemented? These problems often can be
resolved and even avoided with good consensus-building skills.
Keep in mind that consensus is when everyone can support the decision. Some may be reluctant or
unable to come to a decision because they are worried about making a mistake. Some might have their
egos so invested in their idea that it is difficult for them to negotiate and cooperate. Also, voting
on proposals creates a set of people who have lost and are then not as motivated to support and
implement the winning ideas.
You can assist the teams you are on with your
consensus-building skills. Try these ideas::
 | | | Check for consensus when you hear your team getting excited about an idea.
"Seems like we all like that idea. I'm wondering if we have consensus."
"It sounds like we may have consensus. What does everyone think?"
| |
| | | | | | When a team is stuck in disagreement, suggest identifying and listing the advantages
and disadvantages. This typically encourages openness and objectivity.
"Let's write out the pros to this idea on the white board and then the cons."
| |
| | | | | | If one or more members seem to be holding up a decision, negotiate.
"What changes would you suggest that would increase your support?"
"How can we resolve this together?"
Then, of course, listen to and consider all ideas.
