“What’s Your Workforce Crisis?”

Video Clips

This series of videos is part of a longer video created by NOVA in 2008 featuring interviews with regional employers and a renowned economist to discuss a number of issues anticipated to impact not only Silicon Valley and its world-class workforce, but also the rest of California.

Part 1: Retirement Wave

A tidal wave of retirements is approaching as Baby Boomers prepare to leave the workforce. What impact will this have on Silicon Valley's industry and infrastructure?

Part 2: Industry in Transition

As industries evolve due to technological innovation and consumer need, Silicon Valley's workforce must adapt.

Part 3: Middle-Skill Jobs

As the workforce evolves, there will be many opportunities in the number of "foundational" jobs across a number of industries.

Part 4: Training Needs

While many of the jobs expected to have a substantial number of openings will require college degrees, a large number of mid-level occupations will require no more than a high school diploma and some level of specialized training.

Part 5: Recruitment Issues

Historically, Silicon Valley has not had difficulty locating a qualified workforce due to the educational attainment of the Baby Boom generation. Will the next generation of workers be as prepared to fill the gaps?
