City of Sunnyvale Hosts Small Business Resource Fair Nov. 16

The City of Sunnyvale's Economic Development Division is coordinating a Small Business Resource Fair on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, at the Sunnyvale Community Center Ballroom, 550 E. Remington Drive, from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Can your agency, nonprofit or private business help provide small business resource information at the event? Or,do you work with any agency that provides free or low-cost resources for small businesses? If so, please call Maria Rodriguez, an Administrative Analyst with the Economic Development Division of the City of Sunnyvale at (408) 730-7702. There is no charge for any group to participate and no charge to attendees.

Some participating agencies include NOVA@CONNECT! Business Services, Small Business Administration, Employment Development Department, Employment Training Panel, The Board of Equalization and the Contractor's State License Board.

Katrina Recovery Job Connection: links workers with employers

The Katrina Recovery Job Connection Web site connects workers needing jobs with employers who want to hire them. Individuals looking for work and the opportunity to rebuild their lives, either in hurricane-impacted areas or in new locations, can connect with employers who are anxious to hire them, for either permanent jobs or for jobs that are focused on cleanup and recovery. The site is produced by America's Job Bank and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor.

EDD: Senior Worker Employment Assistance Program

California's Employment Development Department (EDD) has a page on its Web site devoted to all aspects of the Senior Worker Employment Assistance Program. Of particular interest to businesses is the section titled "Employer" under the heading "Resource Directories." This section has information on:

• Employer Toolkit: a collection of best business practices

• Effective Employment Practices: hiring, retention, training, company culture

• Helpful Information: myths and realities about older workers; part-time work and other flexible options

• Labor Market Data: charts showing – supply and demand; percentage of displaced workers re-employed; change in labor force by age; weeks of unemployment by age group

NOVA's Workforce Review

The Workforce Review is a two-page fact sheet featuring data on labor force trends, including regional unemployment rate and change, specific labor force data for NOVA's consortium of cities, and workforce reductions in the NOVA area.
