Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for Laid-off Workers

 1.
Do I have to pay for NOVA services?
No. NOVA, a nonprofit, federally funded career center serving Silicon Valley, is able to provide you with training and other re-employment services at no cost to you.
 2.  What do I need to bring in to access NOVA services?
At the time of registration, be prepared to show current identification and documentation verifying your right to work in the United States. You should also bring in your layoff letter and evidence that you've applied for or are receiving California unemployment insurance benefits (if available).
 3.  If I have an employer-paid outplacement benefit, do I have to wait until it expires before using NOVA services?
No. Career transition services can be used concurrently. We strongly encourage you to jump-start your job search by taking full advantage of what your employer has provided. If you’re interested in training, you may want to register with NOVA sooner to explore your training options.
 4.  What type of training is available?
NOVA offers on-the-job training and a wide variety of classroom training programs in various sectors such as high tech, healthcare, manufacturing, biotechnology, financial services, and energy. We do not have a list of training programs. Instead, the training is determined based upon the skills required for your occupational goal. Training funding can be used for certificate-type training that can be completed in less than a year.
Note: You must express interest in training to the State of California Employment Development Department (EDD) within 16 weeks of filing your Unemployment Insurance (UI) claim.
 5.  What schools can I select for my training?
NOVA’s training funding is provided by the federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA). WIA regulations require that schools must have their training programs listed on the statewide Eligible Training Provider List (ETPL). Additionally, a contract between the training vendor and NOVA must be in place. NOVA will work with you to identify an appropriate school.
 6.  How much will NOVA pay toward my training?
NOVA can pay up to $6,000 for a training program that provides the skills identified and supported by the research in your career exploration. The training funding can be applied to only one school.
 7.  If I have additional questions, who can I contact?
Contact NOVA at 408-774-2365 or by e-mail at info@novaworks.org for additional information.
