NOVA Hosts Visit from Congressman Mike Honda's Office

In September, NOVA was pleased to host a visit from Mr. Allen Chiu, Congressional Aide to Congressman Mike Honda. As part of the visit, Mr. Chiu attended a ProMatch weekly meeting (a NOVA/EDD-sponsored program for unemployed workers from the professional fields), which was followed by a tour of the one-stop campus. The visit ended with a discussion with staff about the services that are provided to disadvantaged populations and with several Board members about their partnership with NOVA. Overall, it was a wonderful event and NOVA would like to thank Mr. Chiu for his interest in NOVA's programs and the customers NOVA serves.

Meeting with EDD Executive

In October, the NOVA Director, Kris Stadelman, had the pleasure of meeting with the California Employment Development Department (EDD) Executive, Dennis Petrie, in Sacramento about the trends NOVA is seeing in online career development practices and the specific work NOVA is doing to move some of its job search tools to an online platform. These online tools will enable customers to better utilize these guides on their own time and at their own pace.

Wadhwani Foundation's Race to a Job

The Wadhwani Foundation is dedicated to accelerating economic development and education reform in emerging economies for disadvantaged workers. After more than ten years of leveraging resources in global economic development, the Foundation has established an office in Palo Alto and is launching its first initiative in the U.S. titled, Race to a Job. A representative from the Wadhwani Foundation visited NOVA to learn more about NOVA’s TechLadder initiative, which will focus on enhancing the digital literacy skills for low-skilled workers and career-changers and promote access to high-wage technology jobs in Silicon Valley. The Foundation was also interested in the growing trend toward massive open online courses (MOOCs). Subsequent meetings have been held with the Foundation to explore potential new partnerships and initiatives around the development of online job search tools.

Auto Industry Recover Meeting with DOL Executive

NOVA Director, Kris Stadelman, was invited by the County of Santa Clara economic development office to participate in a meeting with Mr. Jay Williams, Executive Director of the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Office of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers. This meeting was an opportunity for the Director to discuss NOVA’s new electric vehicles initiative, which will help prepare the local workforce for the many jobs that the growing electric vehicle industry cluster is expected to bring to Silicon Valley.

Small Business Symposium

NOVA Employer Services participated in the “Small Business Symposium for Business Growth and Sustained Success” convened by the City of Cupertino and co-sponsored by the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce, Silicon Valley Small Business Development Council, Silicon Valley SCORE and NOVA. The purpose of this event was to provide local business owners with the training and resources they need to grow and sustain their businesses in Cupertino. In addition to being a sponsor for this event, NOVA presented a workshop on “Workforce Development and Your Hiring Needs” and staffed an informational table. The event was open to the public and over 50 businesses attended.

JobScout Visits NOVA

Ms. Adele McCarthy-Beauvais from TRAIL (Technology Resources And Internet Literacy) visited NOVA to discuss JobScout, an initiative of TRAIL, and to learn more about what NOVA is doing in the area of digital literacy. JobScout is an online training platform that is designed to assist disadvantaged workers acquire essential digital literacy skills through a free self-guiding internet-based program that will prepare them to research, apply for and secure gainful employment. Through a pilot partnership with the California State Library, this platform has been launched in libraries across the state. NOVA has also made this program available to its customers at the Job Seeker Center. During the visit, NOVA discussed the TechLadder initiative, and provided a guided tour of the one-stop campus and NOVA's computer education center.
