Preparing for the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act
President Barack Obama signed the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) in July that replaces the Workforce Investment Act as the new governing legislation for the local workforce investment system. Over the past few months, NOVA and its community partners have been preparing for the implementation of the bill that takes effect July 1, 2015. In September, the California Workforce Association’s (CWA) annual Meeting of the Minds conference focused almost exclusively on WIOA. In addition, national and statewide organizations are sponsoring orientation sessions to educate local workforce investment agencies and key stakeholders about the new bill’s requirements. CWA is holding nine WIOA orientation sessions throughout the state. The U.S. Department of Labor Region 6 office held a listening session in October to obtain input on the bill’s expected impact, which will be used to shape pending regulations. And finally, the National Association of Workforce Boards is hosting several webinars in November to provide information about the new bill’s provisions. If you would like more information about upcoming orientation sessions, please visit the organizations’ websites or contact NOVA. In future newsletters, NOVA will be providing updates on WIOA and its implementation, locally.
