2015 Holiday Job Fair
The holiday season is fast approaching and for employers who rely on holiday business to survive and thrive, hiring seasonal workers is an important part of preparing for the expected uptick in business during this time. For the past several years, NOVA has hosted a Holiday Job Fair bringing together employers interested in expanding their workforce over the next several months with NOVA job seekers who are seeking temporary employment and income while they look for more permanent work. This year, the Holiday Job Fair was held on October 1 at the Sunnyvale Community Center and was a big success. 35 employers attended (up from 19 employers exhibiting last year) representing a wide range of opportunities in retail, food services, hospitality and government, including American Girl, Chick-fil-A, City of Sunnyvale Community Services, dd’s Discounts, Home Depot, JC Penney, Lowe’s, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Marriott Courtyard, Orchard Supply Hardware, Safeway, Starbucks, Target, Trader Joe’s, Toys “R” Us, UPS, and YMCA of Silicon Valley, among others. This year, the event was broadly marketed to employers and job seekers at the NOVA Job Center in Sunnyvale, as well as customers served through the San Mateo County contracted service providers. In addition, staff outreached to youth service providers in the region. 167 job seekers attended, including both adults and youth (up from 100 participants at last year’s event.) From the feedback received from attendees, the event was very productive with several employers extending job offers during the fair. One employer commented, “Very professionally done. Hired four!” And a job seeker commented, “I liked that there were a lot of employers there.” NOVA would like to thank all of the employers who participated in the event, in particular, Trader Joe's in Sunnyvale, which supplied water and snacks for all of the exhibitors.
