April 4 Volunteer Resource Fair

For five years, NOVA has hosted an annual Volunteer Resource Fair for our job seeker customers. The purpose of the fair is to provide opportunities for job seekers to volunteer in the community while they are looking for employment that will offer them meaningful work, introduce them to an industry they may wish to pursue as a career, and achieve real-world projects that they can add to their portfolio. Companies and organizations also benefit from this event where they can recruit volunteers from a pool of high-caliber candidates. Examples of volunteer opportunities in the past have included: facilitation, helplines, sales, graphic design, website design, event management, mentoring, social media coordination, data entry, client services, and software development.

This year, the Volunteer Resource Fair was held on April 4, at the City of Sunnyvale Community Center Ballroom. The event was very well attended with 142 NOVA job seekers participating (up from approximately 120 last year) seeking volunteer opportunities from 18 exhibitors, which included: Acterra, Asian Americans for Community Involvement, Benetech, Catholic Charities, City of Sunnyvale, Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley, Kaiser Permanente, NASA Ames Research Center, One Brick Silicon Valley, Pathways, Stanford Blood Center, Stanford University Medical Center (SUMC) Auxiliary, Sunday Friends, Sustainable Silicon Valley, The CLASS Consulting Group, The Trust for Hidden Villa, United Way Silicon Valley, and West Valley Community Services. Job seekers were excited with the diversity of positions that were available to them and the agencies were thrilled with the quality of skills and experience that these prospective volunteers offered. A representative from Benetech stated, “…we had 22 potential volunteers sign up at our table and we will be following up with them in the coming days. Very happy with the results...” NOVA would like to thank all of the exhibitors for providing job seekers with the chance to contribute their talents to interesting volunteer opportunities.
